While Toshiba announced at the CES in Las Vegas that it had developed an HD-DVD capable of holding 51GB of high-definition movies, photos and music, optical media vendor Ritek has claimed that it has produced a disc capable of holding 150GB of data. The disc, according to the manufacturer, is made up of ten separate layers. Currently HD-DVDs hold up to 30GB on two layers. The news comes from tech website DailyTech. According to reports, Ritek unveiled the news behind closed doors at the show. It managed to squeeze these layers onto one disc. It also said the same process can also apply to Blu-Ray discs as well. Should the technique be successful, the company could produce a Blu-Ray disc capable of holding 250GB of data. However, official of the company told DailyTech that the major barrier to this achievement was the lack of a suitable read and write diode that could read the additional eight layers. |
