AOL has launched a new service that enables its AIM instant messenger users to find the exact location of their fellow buddies. The new service uses a location-based plug-in powered by Skyhook Wireless . The wi-fi positioning system enables AIM users to set and share their current or future locations with friends who are also using the plug-in.
A 'Get Location' feature displays the location and distance of AIM buddies on an easy-to-read MapQuest map. The service also includes a 'Near Me' features that allows users to find friends within a set radius of their location. Other users won’t just be able to search for a person without their consent, as AIM buddies with the plugin must select to share their location with friends on their AIM Buddy List. A “Near Me” group will appear in the Buddy List identifying those buddies who have shared their location and who are nearby. User will need to be running AIM 6 software, which is available as a free download, and runs on Windows XP or Windows 2000. To access the Skyhook Wi-Fi Positioning System technology, AIM users must opt-in when downloading the plugin and use AIM on a wi-fi-enabled computer. |
