It seems the love affair is finally over between Universal Music and iTunes. To be fair, it had always been a bit of a rocky romance as all four big record companies felt Apple pushed them into signing away their product too cheaply. Now Universal could be breaking away...
The world's largest music company was due to sign up for another two-year deal with Apple’s popular music store, but has decided against it. Instead, Universal will renew the current deal on a month-by-month basis. That leaves the French-owned music giant with the option of setting up deals with other services and possibly offering them exclusive access. The move won’t be that much of a shock to most in the industry, as Universal only extended the previous deal by a year last time it came up for renewal. But if you’re an iTunes fan, you might soon be getting your fix of 50 Cent, Amy Winehouse, Kanye West, Maroon 5 and Nelly Furtado from a new source in the future. |
