bluphones.jpgWires are so last year and so you might be considering ditching your mobile's earphones for a wireless version. Hoping that you might look its way, Gear4 has a pair of cans that you may want to consider.

The BluPhones are just that. Bluetooth enabled phones that can play music from your mobile and still allow you to take and make calls (because you never know when that emergency call might happen).

These are, despite its looks, quite a light set of headphones weighing in at 26g. It also comes with two sets of earbuds so you can find at least one set that fit your ears OK. Our set didn't fit around our ears too badly. All of the settings are on the headphones so you have to become very well acquainted with the controls because if you don't you may end up turning the headphones off instead of trying the volume up (we are stupid and that's what we did on a couple of occasions).

Setting it up requires you to press one of the buttons and then set about pairing it up with your phone. We tried pairing it up with a Nokia N70, an Apple Mac and the brand spanking new Sony Ericsson P1i. Setting up it easy to do once you have consulted the quick start guide. Once done we tested the sound quality.

Basically this is where you need a device that supports A2DP. When we tried to listen to our test track, I predict a riot by the Kaiser Chiefs, we were a little disappointed with the sound quality. This we found out a little later was not really the fault of the BluPhones. Neither the N70 or our Apple Mac support this standard so any sound is in inglorious mono.

Once we hooked it up to our Sony Ericsson P1i, then we got a proper idea of what the cans can do. The sound is in stereo and listenable. Also, when a call comes in the the music stops so you can have a chat and then restarts once the call is finished.

The headphones, once charged, are claimed to have a playing/talk time of about five hours before it needs recharging and has a 60 hour standby time.  It also has a range of about 10 meters. (I managed to walk around the offices and still listen to the music without it cutting out completely).

The phones are something to consider if you intend to play music through your mobile instead of you iPod.

We managed to spot a pair on sale here for £49.99.

Rating: 7/10
