Oyster cardThe number of places selling Oyster Cards will almost double to more than 4,000, according to Ken Livingstone. The Mayor of London said the number of machines in shops and newsagents around London would be increased by 1,900 in the next 12 months.

The expansion follows news in June that the government was to close a number of ticket offices in stations, citing the use of Oyster Cards and a reduction in the sales of regular tickets.

“Oyster fares are far cheaper than cash and they reduce queues at bus stops and ticket offices,” Livingstone said.

“I want all Londoners to save money by owning an Oyster card and this expansion will make using Oyster even more convenient.”

The Oyster smartcard service will also be expanded to include all Silverlink stations and services from November 2007.
