Sony has announced new software called PlayTV for the PlayStation 3 that will let us watch, record and replay television shows on demand. Released early next year, it will take the PS3 closer to being the media hub it was promised to be.
President of Sony Computer Entertainment – David Reeves hailed PlayTV as the future of family entertainment. “The PS3 already provides High Definition gaming, Blu-ray Disc movies, music, video, photo album, web browsing and PlayStation Network support," he said. "With the introduction of PlayTV’s state of the art TV tuner and PVR functionality, PS3 is now the best choice of home entertainment hub for the whole family.” PlayTV includes a dual tuner, allowing access to Freeview television channels and will allow the PS3 to record high-definition television programmes. Whole television series can be recorded at the touch of a button, in a similar fashion to Sky+ and the Virgin Media V+ services, using a program planner that can be controlled with the PS3 SixAxis controller or the console's Blu-ray remote. Recorded shows can be streamed to a PSP via Wi-Fi or downloaded from USB for playback later on – useful if you want to catch that episode of Heroes you missed last night while on the train to work. PlayTV will be available in the UK, France, Italy, Germany and Spain when it hits your soapbox in Early 2008.
Pricing has yet to be announced. |
