It looks like Microsoft's Xbox Live television and movie download service might finally be ready to jump the pond (not the shark, thankfully). Already a big hit in the US where gamers pay Microsoft Points to download films and TV episodes, it could launch with a load of BBC content over here.
Allegedly, the two sides are in talks over the television download service. Although we've seen Ross Honey, senior director for media at Microsoft, quoted as saying they are in talks – so you can scratch the allegedly. The big question is whether UK gamers – who already pay their television licence - would have to shell out extra for the downloads? After all, the corporate arm of the Beeb does sell DVD boxsets. Besides cosying up to the BBC, Microsoft is also apparently in talks with several other broadcasters in Europe. Again that mirrors its video-on-demand service in the US, where it stocks content from Fox, MTV, CBS, Paramount, Disney and Warner Bros. TV episodes downloaded in the US can be kept indefinitely, while films can be watched for two weeks. |
