Garmin Mobile XTSat-nav supremo Garmin obviously recognises the danger the latest GPS-enabled smartphones present to its regular business. It’s not sitting around feeling sorry for itself, though, and has launched a “plug 'n play sat-nav for your phone”.

Garmin’s Mobile XT phone software uses a device’s built-in GPS to offer navigation anywhere in Europe or North America.

It comes with preloaded maps so there are no inconvenient pauses to download the next step and includes access to dynamic content such as premium real-time traffic alerts and weather reports.

Best of all, there are no monthly fees – although safety camera alerts stop being free after the first three months.

"Garmin Mobile XT is easy-to-use and affordable, with no monthly charges to get navigating straight away" said Greg Stephenson, Garmin's mobile product manager.

"It's a one-time investment that gives customers full-featured GPS sat-nav on their smartphone whenever and wherever they need it, including areas outside of wireless network coverage."

That one-time investment starts at a recommended retail price of £59.99 for UK and Ireland maps.

If it works how Garmin claims, it will be easy enough for even the most novice user.
