Page 1 of 2 “Fancy surfing on top of a mountain?” a press release from Tariam asks. Not really, bit too bumpy for our liking. But we wouldn’t mind getting some internet access up there. Still there’s about as much chance of that happening as Brian Adams finding somewhere in a forest to plug his electric guitar in, right? Wrong.
Tariam’s Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN) uses satellites to give you coverage even if you wander pretty far off the beaten track. It currently fires a signal across 85 per cent of the world's landmass, and covers 98 per cent of the world's population – with that being extended to truly worldwide around mid 2008. There are office set-ups but the kit that really caught our eye is the portable terminal. Simply pop this bit of kit, which is around the same size as modern laptops, into your bag and pull it out when you need to connect.
The only drawback for more modestly-endowed gadget fans is the price, with the terminals starting at around £1,000. |
