Google gallops onto mobiles

Sample ImageNot content with ruling the roost when it comes to our online computing lives, Google is also eager to take over our mobile phones. The company has set up a partnership with various communications providers and plans to unveil an open platform for mobile phone devices.

The system, called Android, was developed through the Open Handset Alliance, a multinational initiative comprised of 34 technology and mobile industry providers.

The free operating system will be designed to help the internet work better on mobile handsets.

“This is going to bring the internet into cell phones in a very cool way,” said Andy Rubin, Google’s director of mobile platforms.

To create Android, Google developed various partnerships with T-Mobile, HTC, Qualcomm, Motorola and others.

Google reckons the first Android-based phones will be available in the second half of 2008.

Rumours that Google would launch its own cellphone surfaced previously when the company filed a patent for a system of mobile payments.
