Technology is starting to rule the lives of British workers, according to a study by tech support company The Geek Squad. One in four UK employees admit that they will be reading work emails over the Christmas holidays.
The Geek Squad said the rise in the use of devices such as BlackBerrys and in remote working seems to be contributing to the growth of an ‘Always On’ work culture in the UK. One in five of respondents keep their laptops beside them throughout the evening with 34 per cent of women and 38 per cent of men checking work emails from home. The report also said it is a sign that professionals may be becoming too connected to IT, with three quarters of those surveyed revealing they routinely eat their evening meal stuck in-front of their PC screens, often leading to family arguments. A spokesman for the Geek Squad said the amount of technology in our homes was having a wider impact. “The traditional ‘Royle Family’ image of a nation slouching in front of the tv is changing fast - we spend less time in front of the TV and on traditional pastimes than on our computers." The study surveyed 1500 adults in the UK to examine how technology is being used in the home. |
