Sony is exiting the rear-projection TV market stage left, following disappointing sales. But don’t worry Sony fans, the company isn’t bailing out of the market altogether and plans to concentrate on LCD and OLED flat-panel TVs instead.
Sales of Sony’s rear-projection TVs have fallen considerable over the last year and the business had been losing money. Sales have dropped below one million for the last two years, racking up just 700,000 in 2006 and only around 400,000 in 2007. In comparison, LCD and OLED televisions have seen a huge boost – with Sony expecting to sell around 10 million LCDs alone in 2007, compared with 6.3 million in 2006. Meanwhile, OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) technology has recently allowed Sony to build a TV with an 11-inch screen that is only three millimetres thick. |
