wii_small.jpgHackers, what a clever bunch of people they are. Some of them have even managed to make the runaway success that is the Wii, somehow run homebrew games. (Although if homebrew games are anything like homebrew beer, we'd advise you to steer well clear of them!)

A group of security researchers demonstrated the hack to an audience at the 24th Annual Chaos Communication Congress in Berlin. The group - headed by Michael Steil and Felix Domke - said they had hacked the encryption used on the console, which would in theory allow them to run their own game code on the platform.

Developers have managed to write homebrew games for the Gamecube, but this is thought of as the first time that a hack has allowed games to make us of the Wii innovative Wiimote controllers as it allows access to system resources.

The demo took place at the end of the groups presentation on Deconstructing Xbox 360 Security and while that offered the possiblity of running Linux on an Xbox 360, it was the Wii hack that really caught people's attention.

While Nintendo could revoke the encryption keys, hackers could still managed to find other ways around them.

Here's the video.

Also here is an interview with exploit author here.
