Televisions are
getting bigger all the time, in fact if you are a premiership
footballer with £50,000 burning a hole in your back pocket, you could
buy this huge plasma television from John Lewis.
However the rest of will most likely have a 60-inch television gracing
our walls within the next ten years, according to electronics giant Sharp.
The company said that 50-inch LCD TVs are the biggest growing sector in
the market at the moment and the trend towards bigger and better
screens will continue. 42-inch television sales had increased by 46 per
cent in the last year, while 46-inch models saw a sales increase of 150
per cent over the last year.
According to Mike Gabriel, head of marketing and communications for
Sharp Electronics in the UK, big screens are no longer for just shop
windows or shiny office receptions.
"The demand for HD-ready 1080p
picture quality in the home has led to an increase in both the
affordability and availability of larger TVs. People can now expect a
home cinema experience from their TV and technology that was once
associated with the rich and famous is now accessible to homes across
the country."
According to figures from market research firm
GFK, large flat-screen TV sales have risen by 182 per cent year on year.
"The growth in the popularity of larger screen TVs is underlined by the fact
that last year our most popular range was the 42in," said Tommaso Monetto,
product manager for the Sharp Aquos LCD TV.
It not all joy for big tellies. As reported by Absolute Gadget, Sony has pulled out of rear-projection telvision production, citing disappointing sales.
