Samsung gets into rubber with rugged mobile phone

We often find ourselves having to replace mobile phones that have been dropped from a great height (OK maybe the ones we don't like so much or have gotten bored with), but Samsung now has a mobile phone that is tough enough to withstand just about anything you can throw at it (or indeed throw it at).

The Samsung Solid (SGH-M110) is understandably a basic phone in terms of features (you won't be able to blog with it - so would make a great gift for a certain tech journalist we know). But what it does have is a military-grade rubberised body (that's military grade IP54 for the war wonks) and is dust and shock resistant.

"Encased in a thick rubber body this phone lives up to its name to withstand tough treatment, making it ideal for any tradesman, extreme sports enthusiasts or those who simply need a durable phone," according to the blurb the company sent out to the press.

So, it's for people in harsh outdoor environments. To that end it also features SOS dialling - which means it will send out a message to a pre-selected contant in your address book when the volume button is pressed three times in quick succession. It will then auto-answer the next incoming call.

While basic, the phone still sports an FM tuner as well as GPRS connectivity, VGA camera, WAP 2.0, MMS and Bluetooth.

At the moment it is only available through O2 in the UK and will set you back £59.99 on PAYG or you can get it for free on contract.
