BT is planning to install a new fibre-based network in the area that will see internet speeds of around 100Mbps (compared that to the 5Mbps that most of us dream of!) Basically this will involve laying down a fibre network instead of copper in a new 10,000 home development in the area. The development would put Ebbsfleet on par with broadband speed in Korea, Japan and some parts of the US. The work is due to start in August on land owned by Land Securities by BT Openreach. It will then offer lines to the likes of Carphone Warehouse and Sky as well as its own BT Retail. These speed not only offer fast internet but could mean that customers would be able to watch high-definition television without buying it separately from Sky or Virgin Media. "Openreach will provide the basic infrastructure and service providers will have the opportunity to build their own services on the back of it," said head of BT Openreach Steve Robertson. "This is our first deployment of fibre rather than copper to residential customers on a new build site. It will enable communication providers to gauge what demand exists for very high speed broadband, and to assess what commercial models may be appropriate in the future." Prices for the new service could be anything from £100 per year for a basic line up to £500 for the full 100Mbps service. |
