Oh you lucky Virgin Media customers - it looks like you'll be able to
surf the interweb as blazing sppeds as the company announced plans to
upgrade the network from 4Mbps to 10Mbps.
Also on the cards are plans to give some 9m customers broadband accesss of up to 50Mbps.
Customers on Virgin Media's ‘L' tier broadband
package will be upgraded for free, taking their service from 4Mb to
10Mb. The upgrade will roll out by regions from late February giving
customers more than double the speed of their current package. With the
new 10Mbps service, customers will be able to download music tracks in
four seconds and an album in around a minute or
a TV show in around five minutes.
Successful trials in Ashford, Folkstone
and
Dover have already taken place with Virgin Media extending its upgrade
programme to 50Mbps. Virgin Media currently offers customers speed
up to 20Mbps, and the new 50Mbps service will be rolled out to 9m
households in the UK by the end of this year.
Neil Berkett, acting CEO of Virgin Media said “Virgin Media's cable network gives us a natural
superiority over other broadband services and we're delighted to reward
our customers with this free upgrade. We've barely scratched the
surface of what's possible with our cable network, and we will continue
to look for new ways to satisfy the growing demand for even faster
broadband in the UK. We're proud to be leading the country's superfast
broadband revolution.”
As reported by Absolute Gadget, BT is planning to install a new fibre-based network in the area that will see internet speeds of of around 100Mbps.
