It's no good popping down your local Woolworths to buy a copy of Transformers on HD-DVD, you won't find it! The retail chain has announced that it will only be stocking Sony-backed Blu-Ray discs from now on. 

The store will not be selling HD-DVD discs in store anymore from March but will make them available via its website.

"Sales figures clearly show that the market is moving towards one format of high definition DVD," said Steven McGunigel, DVD buyer at Woolworths. "The main reason is the success of Sony's PlayStation 3 machine. Because it plays Blu-Ray discs, there are over ¾ million homes in the UK that can view the new high definition format. There is no where near that number of HD-DVD players around."

He added that switching to Blu-Ray only "will provide one clear offer to customers in the format they want to watch high definition movies in."

According to figures from Woolies, Blu-Ray discs outsold HD-DVD discs in store by ten to one over the Christmas period (which is Woolies most lucrative period and gives us a very good idea where the market is going). It has also become the biggest retailer of the new format disc in the UK. Figures have soared 40 per cent per month.
