With BBC TV’s Ski Sunday back on our screens it must mean the Wintersports Season is well and truly here – and an estimated 1.3 million Brits are expected to head overseas over the next three months to hit the slopes. But will they get a good deal on calls home?
A recent EU ruling imposed a cap on roaming charges, or in other words the cost of making or receiving calls on your mobile when in Europe. But mobile phone firm 3 is warning British ski fans heading for the likes of France, Austria or Switzerland to check their mobile phone deals before they travel... or face a mountainous bill when they return home. The 2007 legislation means mobile operators can still charge up to 38p a minute for calls made from Europe to the UK, while incoming calls can cost up to 19p. 3 said it has the lowest roaming rates in the EU when compared to both UK AND EU operators, and has led the market by slashing its European tariff to just 25p per minute for making calls, and 10p for receiving them - while most other networks have “begrudgingly stuck to the capped rates”. “Too many people feel they get ripped off when taking their mobile abroad, so it's vital to check with your operator exactly what roaming package is being offered,” said 3 marketing director John Penberthy-Smith. “If you’re getting away to the slopes over the next few weeks, a bit of pre-planning is all it takes to make it lot cheaper to keep in touch with loved ones back home.” |
