fringFring has updated its free to use mobile phone application. And for those cynics who say you get nothing good for free, prepare to be amazed by the new file-sharing, enhanced IM-style chat and increased language options.

Yes, the latest version lets users swap files from mobile to mobile or mobile to PC using the new file transfer capabilities.

Fring was originally launched as a Voice over IP service (internet telephone stuff, a bit like Skype). However, the company said over the past 12 months it had developed to become a mobile internet service and community in its own right.

The new file sharing feature lets fringsters swap music tracks, pictures, video clips and other files without the need for MMS, cable, Bluetooth, or Infrared connections.

The connection is made via the phones’ mobile internet capability, as per usual fring services – using an existing data plan so there’s no extra cost, or Wi-Fi.

File transfer is currently available from fring to fring, fring to MSN and MSN to fring, with more services to be included later.

No doubt fring will be hoping to allow any of the messenger software it supports to send and receive files, including Skype, Google Talk, ICQ, Twitter and now Yahoo! AIM.

IM services on fring offer familiar PC-style indicators that cleverly display whether their contacts are online, away, offline, in a call, on their mobiles or in front of their PCs.

The new fring version has enhanced chat features including new real-time displays alerting the user of new incoming chat, real time typing indication and easier navigation between different chat windows.
