Page 1 of 2 All the talk today was about whether Toshiba is ready to quit the battle for hi-def DVD and hand the crown to Sony’s Blu-ray. Meanwhile, Paramount Pictures was busy signing up to the next great format: downloads. The company inked a deal with Microsoft to bring its catalogue of content to the Xbox Live Marketplace Video Store.
That means blockbuster movies including Transformers, 1408 and, ahem, Norbit, will be available to download in the UK in HD. All Xbox 360 owners connected to Xbox Live will have access to Paramount’s catalogue of current and library films, allowing them to download-to-rent both high definition and standard definition flicks. “With this latest partnership, Xbox 360 aims to place itself at the centre of digital entertainment in the living room, giving consumers the best in high-definition games, movies and music videos,” said Microsoft, quietly kicking a HD DVD Xbox drive under the table. Transformers and other content will debut on the service tomorrow. Films will costs from 250 Microsoft Points (around £2) for standard definition movies and from 380 Microsoft Points (around £3.20) for high-def movies.
