BT logoO2 has it’s own stadium in a famous London venue. iTunes likes to host London gigs under the banner of its own festival. Virgin has its split-venue UK V Festival. Now BT is the latest telecoms company to join the music frenzy, putting its backing behind the Isle of White festival.  The 2008 festival will henceforth be known as the Isle of Wight Festival in association with BT.

BT snagged the rights from Vodafone, who sponsored it in 2007.

BT said it will promote its involvement to its customers via its voice, broadband and vision products, as well as using its branding across the 250-acre festival site.

It will also use other promotional materials such as competitions and events and even have its own official BT chill-out zone on site.

“It is the first time in its history that BT has been involved in the sponsorship of an event of this kind,” said a company suit, flicking through a catalogue of luxury tents.

The 50,000 tickets for the three-day event are now officially sold out, but as part of its promotional activity BT will announce details shortly of a last chance to buy tickets for the festival.

Confirmed headliners for this year’s festival include The Kaiser Chiefs, the Sex Pistols and The Police.

Also appearing throughout the weekend is Grammy Award nominee Lily Allen, Q Award “Best new Act” winners The Enemy, Brit Award winners KT Tunstall and Kate Nash, legendary punk rockers Iggy and The Stooges, Manchester maverick Ian Brown plus the Kooks, N.E.R.D and James.

A host of the hottest newcomers have also been confirmed, including Brit nominees the Hoosiers and Scouting for Girls.

“Being associated with an event like this reflects how BT has transformed as a business and has become an established player in the world of multi-media entertainment with new services like our next generation TV service BT Vision,” said Gavin Patterson, BT’s consumer group managing director.

The Isle of Wight Festival takes place between 13 and 15 June at Seaclose Park, Newport, Isle of Wight.
