Intel Atom microchip processorFancy a smaller laptop? Anyone who answered no, go stand in the corner and think about what you’ve done. The rest of us can all marvel at Intel’s latest development, the tiny Atom chip.

According to Intel, the new Atom processor chip will enable manufacturers to reduce the size of mobile computers and let consumers take the best of computing with them as they travel.

Anand Chandrasekhwer, Intel's Ultra Mobility group vice president (and a big fan of stating the obvious) says the device is called an atom because an atom is the smallest element of matter.

The new chip is scheduled to rollout in the second quarter of 2008.

Following its launch, Chandrasekhwer indicates a number of the company's clients will debut a host of new consumer products.
