The winners of the high-def scrap are now known (it was Sony in the Blu corner in case you’ve been on a trip to the moon). Remarkably, one company that shouldn’t have been affected by Toshiba’s decision to end hostilities is actually falling behind.
Samsung should have been future-proofed against the high-def war, having created a format-defying model that played both sets of discs. But with news that HD DVD is giving up the ghost, it has decided to scrap plans to bring out the Blu-ray/HD DVD BD-UP5500. "The window of opportunity is smaller than it was before,” Samsung said. “In light of recent announcements, Samsung will not introduce the BD-UP5500 Duo HD Player". So what, you might think? Well, at the moment Samsung doesn’t have a dedicated player that handles Blu-ray Profile 1.1. Profile 1.1 (sometimes called Bonus View or Final Standard) is the latest version of the technology that includes cool new disc features such as Picture-in-Picture. No Samsung Blu-ray/HD DVD BD-UP5500 means no Samsung player with Profile 1.1.
