Six new Blu-ray players have been given the all clear to play DivX files, according to the DivX digital media company. DivX Certification has been granted to Blu-ray DVD players from Panasonic, Philips and Denon.
The new DivX Certified DVD models join the world’s best-selling Blu-ray playback device, the Sony PlayStation 3, which has been capable of DivX playback since December 2007. DivX said the growth of the technology in the emerging Blu-ray market demonstrated growing traction of its licensing business into new product categories. “DivX technology has already become a de facto standard on standard definition DVD devices, with an estimated 41 per cent penetration in the global market as of the end of 2007,” an official statement said. DivX files are popular among online file-sharers, thanks to the superior compression and high visual quality of the format. A single Blu-ray disc can store and playback more than 25 hours of DVD-quality video. The newly certified DVD players include: the Panasonic DMP-BD30EE, Philips BDP7200 and Denon DVD-2500BTC1B, DVD-3800BDC1B, DVD-3800BDSP and DVD-2500BTSP. “The end of the format war creates more opportunity for Blu-ray products,” said Michelle Abraham, a principal analyst at In-Stat. Abraham said In-Stat expects worldwide shipments of Blu-ray players to reach 23 million in 2011. “DivX is well-positioned to become a standard feature on Blu-ray devices, just as it has shipped in millions of DVD players worldwide,” she said. |
