The big gun, though, was the Digital Ixus 970 IS, which Canon described as “a revolutionary addition to the Digital Ixus family” and its “most optically powerful” model ever launched in the range.

Canon’s Digital IXUS 970 IS features a 10-megapixel lens, 5x optical zoom and enhanced image stabiliser technology.

The camera maker said those features combined to offer a wider range of framing possibilities, greater results in low-lighting conditions, and shake-free shots when the zoom is in use.

“Together, these innovative technologies combine to create the most optically powerful Digital IXUS yet,” a Canon statement said.

Features on the Ixus 970 include:
* 2.5-inch PureColor LCD II screen
* new multi control dial.

The Digital IXUS 970 IS is available from late March 2008, priced at £299 (€449) RRP including VAT.
