If your job involves a lot of travelling, then you need a PDA. And since your job depends on it, you’ll want that PDA to be tougher than Mr T in tank. Step up rugged mobile computer manufacturer Getac...
It has created the Getac PS535E fully-rugged GPS PDA (try saying that after a few sherries), which it claims is the most versatile and feature-packed rugged mobile device to date. Not that its light on power, featuring as it does a 400MHz processor, 64MB flash memory and 2GB embedded memory storage (which can easily be upgraded to 6GB for memory-hungry applications). “A tough and reliable industrial PDA that has been built to survive as well as work hard, the PS535E is the ideal mobile computing device,” said a road-hardened Getac spokesman. Getac said the PDA would be ideal for engineering and construction, land surveying, public safety, field service, utilities, military, mapping and other outdoor or service-related fields. It comes with Windows Mobile 5 (not the latest version 6), offers Bluetooth and 802.11b/g Wi-Fi connectivity and has an embedded GPS receiver. Specific field applications are also available as configurable upgrades, such as secure Digital IO slots allowing users to add additional devices such as memory and RFID. The rechargeable Li-ION battery boasts eight hours or more of active use without a recharge. The PDA’s rugged credentials see it meet the MIL-STD-810F and IP54 requirements, which ensure the unit is resistant to water (such as heavy rain), dust and debris. A magnesium alloy design features a hand strap for convenient transport and a screen cover to protect the unit from knocks. The Getac PS535E will be available from Expansys from early May.
