You can see the problem a marketing department would have with a product like the BT FON Wi-Fi service? How do you let people know exactly what it is? Well, first you need a clever metaphor, like a Mexican wave...

“Members of the BT FON Wi-Fi community can get free access to broadband in hundreds of thousands of Wi-Fi Hotspots in the UK and around the world,” a press release reminds us today.

“The great thing about BT FON is that anyone can join and each time they do, another Wi-Fi Hotspot is created so the community keeps getting bigger and better like a Mexican wave.”

BT FON said it hopes to create a Wi-Fi community so big that one day users could get access to broadband on every street.

To really push home the point, footballers from Arsenal, Everton and Celtic have all filmed their own unique Mexican waves.

Peter Crouch has even created a tutorial for the perfect Mexican wave, showing his “quick, sharp snappy moves!”

Fans can upload their own videos, in the hope of getting a bit of fame or pushing their team or area into the top spot.

So far:
284 videos have been uploaded
4 waves have been created
Arsenal is the most popular team
The Rest of the World is the most popular region
The University of Cambridge is the most popular university.
