Nokia finally gives birth to N-Gage

A Nokia N81 8GB earlier todayNokia’s N-Gage mobile games service went live in the UK today. The mobile phone company said N-Gage would allow millions of handset owners to buy and play “high-quality made-for-mobile games”. Just think of it like iTunes for games...

Gamers can try any game for free, allowing them to trial as many as they like before committing to buying anything.

They can also browse the N-Gage Showroom and read reviews of the games on offer to find the perfect one to download directly to a compatible Nokia device or PC.

N-Gage even comes with social networking aspects. With a points system across the N-Gage platform, gamers can see how they compare to other gamers by linking up to the online N-Gage community.

“By connecting with friends across the street, or around the world gamers can also go head to head to be an N-Gage champion,” a Nokia press release said.

Nokia said a host of options are available, including online chat, multiplayer matches or hosted gaming events.

“With N-Gage we’re offering a seamless experience for people around the world to play games that are engaging, accessible and have wide appeal,” said Jaakko Kaidesoja, vice president of games at Nokia and a bloody high score in Scrabble.

“We’re very excited to get this into the hands of our customers, because with them we will shape the future of mobile gaming.”

Prior to the N-Gage service going live, Nokia sought feedback from its fans through the N-Gage First Access program.

An eight-week run saw tens of thousands of participants register for the service from over 100 countries.

“With N-Gage First Access we offered Nokia N81 owners the first chance to try N-Gage and solicited their feedback to help us further refine the experience,” said Kaidesoja.

“We were pleased that so many people took the time to test-drive the service and share their comments. Thanks to them we are now ready to offer an enhanced experience to a wider audience.”

Gamers can download the N-Gage application by visiting the official site on their mobile device or PC.

Games are expected to cost between £6 and £8 – all of which are free to try before buying.

N-Gage is currently compatible with: Nokia N81, Nokia N81 8GB, Nokia N82, Nokia N95, and Nokia N95 8GB.
