Samsung whips out 82-incher (telly that is)

While Mrs. Gadget would prefer a smaller one that will fit in the living room and can't be seen by passers-by on the street outside, I, like most men, prefer to have as big a one as possible. I am, of course, talking televisions and Samsung has unveiled a new one that has an 82-inch screen size - it's a whopper (enough double entendre please! -Ed.)

The new LCD display was launched at the 2008 International Symposium of the Society for Information Display in Los Angeles. The set itself is designed for 120Hz broadcasts, which means that it can display Ultra-high Definition television signals (which would make most modern hi-def tellies look a bit pants in comparison).

Being ultra high-definition, it has a resolution of 3840 by 2160 and gets better contrast and sharper colours by using an LED backlight. The definition is supposed to be several times better than ordinary HD.

Unsurprisingly, Samsung executives were excited about the big, new telly.

"I personally hope the next-generation ultra-high definition level in the LCD panel market will open soon, with increasing consumer demand for clear viewing in households and public spaces," Kim Sang-soo, executive vice president of Samsung’s LCD Technology Center, told reporters at the Korea Times.

This comes on the back of a deal with fellow Korean electronics giant in which each company will buy display panels off each other in order to meet huge demand for big tellies.
