Woolworths might be famous for its pick’n’mix, but one thing you won’t be able to do that with anymore is your musical tastes. The US-owned retailer will ditch CD singles from its shelves in the UK.
Commercial boss Jim Batchelor claimed that traditional singles sales are in “terminal decline”. When you consider there were 55 million sold in 2000, but just eight million sold last year, it’s hard to argue. That’s mainly down to the burgeoning downloads market, which saw sales rocket to 72.6 million last year. Which brings us to Woolworths’ replacement for CD singles sales – its own download site. The brand new digital download site will allow users to shop for music, video, games and mobile content. Kicking off with a tempting offer, the top 10 music tracks cost 59p for the first week the site is live, with all other tracks available from 77p. The top 10 albums will cost £6.99 for the same period, with all other albums costing £7.97. Film and TV prices start at 97p and mobile content is available from £1.50. Woolies said that every major UK digital music release – over 1.2 million tracks – will be available to download, as well as more than 1,000 films and TV shows, including recent blockbusters such as Spiderman 3 and Superbad, and an extensive range of games and mobile content. |
