In the first of our occasional series devoted to matching gadgets with the appropriate alcoholic drink we look at what intoxicating beverage would complement a Bose SoundDock.

Cockburn's, fine makers of port and cheesy '80s adverts (so I come from Moscock? Yes, you probably do!), has had a bit of a makeover to bring it into the twenty-first century and shake off its image of being a drink for the over 60s. Needless to say, we drink quite a lot of the stuff and find it to be the best port you can buy for around a tenner (and sometimes we manage to make it last more than one night!)

According to the press release sent to us, the traditional, rounded bottles of this 193-year-old brand have gone, to be replaced by a chic new design and elegant shape that is "more relevant" to today's port drinkers. (no we don't understand what that means either - all we know is it looks nice!).

We haven't had a chance to taste the port, but we do hope it hasn't changed the favour as well (i.e. done a Coca-Cola). It says it hasn't, so we'll just have to take their word for it.

Now onto why this should be matched with the SoundDock. The Special Reserve is a ruby port with a mellow texture and a hint of dried plums. we know it to be a smooth drink so we think that a gadget to match that looks good and delivers a smooth sound would be the Bose SoundDock. And what do you play with a ruby port - why, Ruby by the Kaiser Chiefs of course.

Cockburn's Special Reserve is available from Waitrose, Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda, Morrisons, Somerfield, Co-Op and Thresher for £9.68. Unfortunately the Bose SoundDock isn't. That'll set you back £299.99 and is available here.
