Lego garbage truckMost 50-year-olds won’t be too popular with the kids, but it seems Lego is an exception to the rule. A poll by retailer Argos found that the plastic blocks have, ahem, built quite a following.

Lego beat out strong challenges by Barbie and He-Man to be named best childhood plaything.

When it came to dream toys that never made an appearance no matter how much brandy kids left out for Santa, it was the Scalextric that broke most hearts.

Naturally, Argos is also tipping the colourful building bricks to be one of the top 10 sellers in 2008, but there are some surprises on its list of current faves.

For one, it seems the legendary Rubik’s Cube is also back in fashion.

“A key toy trend for winter 2008 is high-tech, with the strong emergence of electronic and gaming toys,” said Ian Chaplin, toy trading manager at Argos.

“But there is also a revitalisation of classics such as Lego and Rubik’s Cube.”
