Forget Will Smith. Space Invaders is legend. And according to Taito, no-one had permission to use that legend at the recent Leipzig games convention.
Taito has issued an official statement saying it’s none too pleased about the “wholly unauthorised” use of its brand in the “Invaders!” installation by Douglas Edric Stanley. “Taito is seriously considering all available options-including legal actions against the infringer and, if necessary, the Games Convention exhibitor involved,” the company’s statement said. Any action will be designed to end the “unauthorised and impermissible” misuse of the Space Invaders content and to protect intellectual properties, Taito said. The statement also said the ‘Space Invaders: Die Jubiläumsshow!’ (Space Invaders: the Anniversary Show!) exhibition which was hosted at the Computer Game Museum Berlin was “likewise planned and presented without Taito’s knowledge and authorisation”. Taito Corporation is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Square Enix. |
