Sales of pay-as-you-go mobile phones are up as Brits look for bargains to save money, according to a cashback shopping website. Users on the Froggybank site were eight per cent more likely to buy pay-as-you-go phones compared to the same period last year.
That rise was at the expense of contract mobiles, with those sales falling by four per cent. As well as a shift in mobile phone sales, bundling is also on the increase, with 7.5 per cent more consumers saving money by buying their broadband, TV and phone from the same company.
Broadband switching is also up by 8.5 per cent, as people look to drop their monthly costs - despite recent warnings that cheaper definitely doesn't always mean better.
Froggybank’s marketing manager Nadeem Azam said that British people were turning to every deal and bargain available to them as they try to save money to ride out the credit crunch.
“We have not yet reached the stage where people feel so poor that they will give up satellite TV or cut back on the number of calls and texts they make," he added.
“But they are actively seeking out ways to cut the cost of staying online, connected and entertained.”
Azam said he expected to see this kind of switching continuing in the months to come.
"The big winners will be the firms that realise this and offer the best bundle and pay as you go deals,” he said.
Froggybank compared the buying habits of its 500,000 UK members in May to July 2008 to the same period in 2007. Consumers log on to the site before making online purchases, to earn cashback on everything they spend. blog comments powered by Disqus
