Brown promises to end internet divide

Gordon BrownGordon Brown will use his speech at the Labour Party Conference to promise to close the digital divide in the UK. A budget of £300m over three years will be used to provide the poorest children with free internet access and possibly free computers.

Schools will dispense vouchers from £100 up to £700 to pay for broadband in unconnected homes, as well as software and even hardware.

The moves are expected to affect 1.4 million British children, who will then be able to use distance-learning techniques or improve their IT skills.

The government also hopes that allowing more households to be connected will also improve contact with parents, who will be able to check on their children’s discipline and monitor homework assignments.

More regular internet-based contact could even replace the usual face-to-face meetings held once-a-term.

Schools minister Jim Knight said he had found the money for the project by making savings elsewhere in the children department's budget.
