Review: Philips PET940/05 portable DVD player

Philips PET940/05 portable DVD playerYou could be forgiven for thinking this was a laptop the first time you get it out of the box. And its large size might be OK if it used that extra area to offer a huge, notebook-style screen, but sadly it doesn’t.

Naturally, there’s still a very respectably-sized 9-inch viewing area to glue your eyes to, but even this lacks the image quality of LG’s player and yet the PET940/05 is only slightly cheaper at £169.

There’s also no memory card slot, although realistically that would only be a problem if Philips had also shunned a USB port, which is present and correct. However, the disc drive is pretty noisy if you’re watching a film without headphones and the usability suffers thanks to thin slivers of buttons that are set into the unit and pretty hard to read in low light - although you could always opt for the remote control.

Overall, issues with the noise and screen make this player a little on the expensive side when compared with more budget models.

VERDICT: 5/10
