Apple tells Mac users to install anti-virus

apple_imac.jpgIf you are an Apple fanboy there has always been a sort of smugness when watching Windows users grapple with yet another virus infection on their computers. Well it looks like that smug grin can come off, Apple is telling users to install anti-virus software on the beloved reassuringly expensive computers.

According to a message on Apple's Knowledge Base, users will need to install anti-virus utilities "so that virus programmers have more than one application to circumvent, thus making the whole virus writing process more difficult."

It recommends using either Intego VirusBarrier X5, McAfee VirusScan for Mac or Symantec Norton Anti-Virus 11 for Macintosh.

Of course, these require you to spend money. Alternatively you could install ClamXav, which is free.

And there we were thinking OS X was a secure operating system.
