Halo 3 has become the fastest-selling pre-ordered videogame ever in North America, soaring past the 1,000,000 mark. The title – which will only be available on the Xbox 360 at launch – comes in three versions: Standard Edition; Limited Edition; and the “ultra-collectible” Legendary Edition.
“In fact, demand has been so strong for the Legendary Edition of the game that it is expected to be sold out by the time the game launches on September 25,” Microsoft suits said today. A number of gaming retailers were quick to laud the games success, following the fastest pre-sales in videogame history. “What we’ve experienced is nothing short of phenomenal,” said Bob McKenzie, senior vice president of merchandising at GameStop. “Halo 3 has eclipsed many previous records and will prove to be one of the must-have items of 2007.” “The excitement for Halo 3 is incredible,” said the improbably-named Jill Hamburger, vice president of movies and games at Best Buy. “From our pre-orders online and the buzz we’re hearing in our stores, we know this release is going to be one of the biggest entertainment events of the year.”
The question is, will the other vendors bother to release any games in the same week? Or will they be happy to battle it out for second spot in the sales charts? |
