Energy saving lightbulbThe Australian government plans to ditch the humble incandescent light bulb by 2010 in favour of energy-saving fluorescent bulbs. Legislation will cut the sale of traditional bulbs over the next three years.

Official government figures show that Australia produced almost 565 million tons of greenhouse gases in 2004 and the lightbulb plan is expected to cut that by around four million tons a year by 2012.

According to research, it could also save consumers up to 66 per cent on their household bills.

"It's a little thing, but it's a massive change," environment minister Malcolm Turnbull told Nine Network television.

"If the rest of the world follows our lead, this will reduce an amount of energy to the tune of five times as much energy as Australia consumes."
