Could Windows 7 be getting all touchy-feely on us?

microsoft_surface.jpgAh, Windows! It’s the magpie operating system. We only say that because some Microsoftie has gone and written on a blog that the next version of the Redmond Behemoth’s operating system will take several leafs out of the iPhone’s playbook – a la multi-touch features.

According to Hilton Locke, one of the engineers working on development of the OS for tablet PCs, the next iteration of the OS will "blow away" users.

"I will say that if you are impressed by the "touch features" in the
iPhone, you’ll be blown away by what’s coming in Windows 7," said Locke. "Now if only
we could convince more OEMs that Windows Touch Technology is going to
drive their sales."

The new version of Windows, codenamed Windows 7 (must have taken them
ages to come up with that!) will feature touch technologies that have
been bandied around by Jobs and his mob for ages. This follows on from
Locke revealing that the new Dell Latitude XT Tablet has now seen the
light of day. This new PC has ‘capacitive touch capability’ – which in
laymen’s terms means you won’t have to prod the screen to get a
response.

Of course touch features are nothing new and the iPhone has got them down pat, even the Blackberry is considering putting touch features into its phones. Heck, even other parts of Microsoft have gotten in on the act with the Microsoft Surface, so it begs the question, what is going on at Microsoft? And why don’t more people like Vista?
