Admittedly it has taken Dell a few years to get on the trail blazed by
the likes of Sony and Apple with their sleek takes on desirable
notebooks, but the Austin, Texas company looks set to cement is own
style reputation with a couple of arty mobile computers, the Studio XPS
1340 and 1640.

The two laptops will be officially launched at the Consumer Electronics
Show (CES) in Las Vegas today. And the lappies take a design hint from
Sony and its Vaios by putting a power button on the hinge.

Both sport backlit keyboards, faux leather shells and  high-gloss, high-resolution displays alongside its other specifications.

Both notebooks sport Core 2 Duo P8400 processors, 64-bit Vista Home
Premium, 1366 by 768 WGA displays, 4GB of DDR3 SDRAM, a 320GB hard
drive, a slot-loading DVD writer, an integrated two-megapixel webcam
and a dedicated NVidia GeForce 9400M G on the 1340 and an ATI Mobility
RADEON M86XT video card on the 1640. Both have HDMI and eSATA ports as
well.

On
the 1640, you can also upgarde to 8GB of DRR3 RAM (the 1340 can only go
to 4GB), and the option to upgarde to a Blu-ray/DVD combo
drive.

Currently the models are only available in the US, and start from $1,199 (£800).
