reported on the rumours a couple of months ago, but it’s now
been confirmed that RPG monolith Square Enix has reached an agreement
to buy British publishers Eidos, home of Tomb Raider and
Hitman.

The Final
Fantasy
bods have stumped up £84 million for the
beleaguered Brits – a price that, according to Square,
represents a premium of 129 per cent over Eidos’ current market value.

SE
President Yoichi Wada said, "Eidos maintains a strong
reputation for high quality development…Eidos’ products
are highly complementary to our business and will accelerate our
aggressive expansion into Western markets." Eidos’
Chairman, Tim Ryan, added, "We believe that this cash offer
provides Eidos Shareholders with an attractive price and certainty in
today’s challenging market backdrop and economic outlook."

While the
heads of each company are happily backslapping, the deal hasn’t
quite gone through yet – Eidos’ shareholders need to
approve it by at least a 75 per cent majority at the company’s next
meeting in March. Since Eidos are encouraging them to sell up, it
seems likely to go without a hitch.

The full
announcement can be read over at Kotaku, for those of you who speak
finance.

And
wouldn’t you know it, this news comes just at the time to
distract those annoyed by the fact that Dragon Quest IX has
been delayed again.
