Handsets based on Long Term Evolution (LTE) are expected to eventually offer wireless download speeds of 100Mbps and upload speeds of 50 Mbps when using two antennas.

But LG is ready to show off a working modem chip that can achieve wireless download speeds of 60 Mbps and upload speeds of 20 Mbps.

LG will display three data cards using the company’s own modem chip technology and connecting three different devices: a laptop, a netbook and a prototype mobile internet device (MID).

In addition, LG will also display an early smartphone prototype with LTE built into the device.

The four devices will run applications such as HD video streaming, video conferencing, Video on Demand and internet browsing.

The demonstration will take place at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on February 18.

"Most of the major mobile operators are pursuing LTE-based 4G technology," said a forward-looking statement from LG.

"Because it is based on the existing 3GPP technology evolutionary path, WCDMA and CDMA carriers will be able to upgrade their networks to LTE at far less cost than building a new network based on a different technology.

“I am confident that when initial 4G service rolls out next year, LG will be the best-positioned company to provide handsets that leverage this new technology,” said Dr Skott Ahn, president and CEO of LG Electronics’ Mobile Communications Company.

“This chip is the result of significant research and development over many years and an achievement of which we are all very proud.”
