packard_bell_ixtreme_maestro_desktop.jpgYou can give your PC a lick of paint when you want to refresh it, but it won’t make it run any faster. Thankfully, Packard Bell reckons its ixtreme desktop PC will make it easy to upgrade and expand its capabilities so it’ll stay on top form.

The Packard Bell ixtreme desktop has been around before and the company says it’s “born again”. So, the new design and features are an attempt to make it very easy to use, while the “fully expandable PC” marks its territory as “the heart of the digital home”.

The design includes a glossy black chassis with matt accents and soft curves that is highlighted by a glowing blue power on/off button. Meanwhile, Optical drives and card readers are discreetly hidden by doors.

The new Photo Frame button, on top of the chassis, immediately displays images from the hard disc or memory card to the monitor – just like a digital photo frame. All you need to do is to activate the button.

The My BackUp key allows users to save their irreplaceable data on any external storage device, with one touch of a button.

A storage deck, on the top, also allows users to plug in external devices such as MP3 players or digital cameras via the connection ports in the bay.

You’d be forgiven for thinking the Packard Bell ixtreme might be lacking some oomph since so much emphasis has been placed on its expandability, but it is powered by either an Intel Core i7 processor, an Intel Core2 Quad processor or an AMD Phenom II X4 quad-core processor and comes with up to 12GB of DDR3 memory.

It features up to a 3TB hard disc drive, an optional Blu-Ray combo drive and free slots for an additional storage drive or an optical drive.

Peripheral connectivity is made easy thanks to a whopping 10 USB 2.0 connectors, up to two e-sata ports, up to three Firewire ports and a HDMI output, plus a multi-card reader.

The Packard Bell ixtreme with Windows Vista Home Premium Edition will be available in July starting from £599, depending on the options you choose.
