monsters_vs_aliens_bob.jpgJeffrey Katzenburg refers to it as “the beginning of a new era”, but is it possible that a switch to 3D cinema could actually stop all those video-camera-in-the-cinema copies hitting the internet? The creators of Monsters Vs Aliens certainly think so…

Is this film, as you’ve suggested, the future of cinema?
Jeffrey Katzenberg: I hope so. I think this is the beginning of a new era in which this amazing 3D technology is going to be explored by many different filmmakers and I think it is going to be a very exciting time both for the filmmaking community and even more importantly for audiences around the world. It will redefine what it means to come to the local movie theatre and see a movie today.

Is this a new weapon in the fight against piracy? Because it would seem 3D is something you can’t instantly pirate.
Lisa Stewart: You can try and you’ll get a very blurred image and it won’t translate at all. So it’s a weapon against piracy but I’d like to think of it more as a treat to get audiences off their couch and back into the theatre. I think it’s a unique way to see a movie and it’s not something you can see sitting in your living room. That’s a great advantage for all of us.

How do you direct a film that’s in 3D? Is it twice as hard as a traditional movie, or less complex?
Conrad Vernon: The complexities are mainly in the technology but the first thing that we did when we heard we were going to make this in 3D is we sat down with the brains trust of this movie and figured out how we were going to do this stylistically. We wanted to make sure we weren’t shaping the movie around the 3D, we were using the 3D to enhance the storytelling. So we first of all said we’re not going to be roped into being over the top with this. We’re not going to stick things out at people and we’re not going to take people out of the story because of the 3D, we’re going to use it to tell the story. Once we did that we sat down with Jeffrey and he agreed with us so we went very softly forward with 3D and made sure we understood what we were doing first. And then once we understood the 3D and saw what places in the story it was helping and where it was hindering we started to move forward.

Monsters Vs Aliens is released on DVD and high-definition Blu-ray on 26 October and is available to pre-order now.
