blu-ray-logo.jpgOnce upon a time (read: about eighteen months ago), Toshiba was the principal supporter of the HD-DVD format. But now the Japanese giant has faced up to its failure and got into bed with Blu-ray.

Since the demise of HD-DVD, Toshiba’s been mainly building upscaling products and keeping out of the way. But now it’s formally applied to join the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), which is the a requirement for anyone who wants to produce Blu-ray gadgets.

The company said: “In light of recent growth in digital devices supporting the Blu-ray format, combined with market demand from consumers and retailers alike, Toshiba has decided to join the BDA.”

Presumably this means we’ll be seeing Toshiba Blu-ray players, PC disc drives, notebooks with built in Blu-ray, TVs with integrated players and the like.

We reckon the first fruits of the deal will pop up at next month’s IFA techfest in Berlin.
