Vax V 124 Dual V Upright Carpet Washer

It would take us a lot (and we mean a lot) to get us off our Dyson vacuum cleaner addiction. But Vax has a new carpet cleaner that threatens to run the cyclonic sucker out of town.

The Dual V upright carpet cleaner is a beast of a carpet cleaner, weighing in at around 11kg and 112cm in height. But luckily we have gadget granny to test out our cleaner as well and if she can manage to pull this thing around (and she’s just gone 74) then so can we.

The cleaner comes with two containers. One is split into two compartments, one for the water and one for the cleaning solutions. The cleaner comes with a sample sized bottle ofVax Ultra carpet and upholstery cleaning solution but refills will set you back around £14 (when we went to buy some more from Curry’s).

Luckily you don’t have to measure out how much fluid is needed as the Automix function on the cleaner will do that pulling in the right amount of fluid to water when on a wash mode.

To get the cleaner started there are two switches. One turns the thing on and off and the other controls if you are rinsing or washing. Wash mode dispenses the right amount of cleaning fluid when in use while the rinse mode simply uses water to dislodge dirt from the carpet.

There is also a brushbar which is kind of like a vacuum cleaner brush bar with the volume turned out to 11. Called SpinScrub Brush Technology, the five brushes somehow manage to really scrub your carpet clean without ruin it. Of course on our test shag pile, we put the brushes on as the carpet in our office would make Kim and Aggie wept in disgust.

We set to work on the carpet. To control the flow of liquid (consisting of either water and cleaning fluid or plain water) there is a trigger button. On our first attempt we did not realise that we had kept the trigger down and managed to get through the entire container-full of fluid and only managed to clean a little bit of the floor. Also, the cleaner is very loud so don’t think you can clean at night when the kids have gone to bed.

Once we had returned from Curry’s with a new bottle of cleaning fluid, we set to work on this sad excuse for a dirty floor. We must say that after about two hours solid graft and sweat later, the results were very impressive. While we would not say that the carpet was back to showroom condition (it had gone far beyond that a long time ago) the carpet looked respectable enough to invite guest back around again. Stains we thought were going to stay forever, had disappeared completely in some cases.

Even better, the next day we tried out the cleaner just on the wash mode (remember no carpet shampoo was used in this test). Again, as the previous time, container after container of almost pitch black water had to be poured out of the dirty water container. In both modes the water from the container is heated up before being applied to the carpet and this should help loosen dirt that an ordinary vacuum couldn’t pick up in years.

the cleaner also comes with a hose attachment for upholstery and stairs. Again, we had impressive results with the cleaner and the test stairs came up a treat.

What was even more impressive was the fact that the cleaner manages to suck most of the water back out, meaning that you don’t have to wait too long before you can step on the floor again.

Overall, while a beast of a machine, it is good looking too and really effective as a carpet cleaner. Although at £239 from Amazon, you may want to club together with family to make your purchase stretch further.
