It’s been on the cards for a while but it looks slightly more likely that a new version of the little console that could is on the cards. Square Enix boss Yoichi Wada reckons that a new version of the wildly successful Nintendo console could land in 2011.
Wada also said that motion control systems on the PS3 and Xbox 360 might not be the huge hit those companies were expecting.
“Present game machines already have a lot of functions: they are a network terminal, a Blu-ray or DVD player, and a gaming machine,” Wada-san told the Financial Times.
“Compared to these three pillars, the controllers are quite limited, so the impact may be small. They are an extension of the gaming function.”
Wada added that the Xbox Natal motion controller is likely to be the user interface of choice, while a new Wii would have “functionality more like that of Microsoft’s Xbox 360 or Sony’s PlayStation 3, and possibly a different controller.”
