One day a manufacturer will produce a notebook that will be a true rival to the MacBok Air. In the meantime, MSI has launched its new ultra-slim X400 notebook that is said to have “designer looks without the designer price tag”.

The lappie with come in two versions. For £499 you get the notebook with a modern smooth-edged design and a choise of either a piano black or pearl white finish.

At its thinnest point, the device measures just 9mm and weighs in at a paltry 1.5kg.

It also spots an Intel Centrino chip, a backlit 14-inch HD LCD widescreen display and connectivity such as HDMI, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

The cheaper model features a 320GB hard drive and the Intel SU2700 processor. The £569 version comes with a SU3500 chip, a 500GB disk and an external optical drive.

MSI will also throw in a carry case and a two-year warranty.
